I look at the cover again.

“It’s not XS—it’s VS! Like Virgil Stuart!”

“Your grandfather!” exclaims Musky.

Overwhelmed, I open the notebook.

“Read it later, Billy Stuart,” says Foxy. “We have a serious problem.”

What could be more important than my grandfather Virgil’s notebook?

The river is overflowing and filling up the cave, slowly but surely!

Operation Get Us Out of Here!

There is no way out! The river has become a torrent that has already reached the mouth of the cave. Soon our shelter will be flooded.

I make my hands into a megaphone to be heard over the noise of the storm and the river.

“Troop, we have to find a new exit.”

“Let’s try this,” says Foxy.

She points toward A DARK PASSAGEWAY that climbs toward the back of the cave.

Musky has brought her flashlight. Me too. We plunge deeper into the cave. After a short climb we hike downward. The low ceiling forces us to stoop.

Again I entrust the dog to Foxy, because they love each other so much! She keeps the poodle on his leash.
